On this 15th of July the Kingdom marks the night in 1938 when its sovereignty was preserved and Tintin earned, beyond any doubt, the Order of the Golden Pelican. The Consulate joins the national spirit with joy and gratitude, and sends its warmest wishes to every Syldavian: in Klow and the provinces, in the community here in Bangkok and across Southeast Asia, and in every corner of the world where the memory of the Sceptre is kept alive. May the Sceptre of Ottokar light your day, and the rest of the year prove worthy of it.
The Consul's Summer Mission
The Consul is in the United Kingdom, where the summer mission has carried him to the northern reaches of the isle. The Office is content to record that the Consul, whose attachment to Zalta mineral water is a matter of official record, has shown a commendable open-mindedness toward the region's celebrated bottling traditions. One point, for the avoidance of doubt: the Consul's enthusiasm in this matter is entirely personal, and bears no relation to the mercantile notices published elsewhere on these pages.
The Day in Bangkok, Quietly
With the Consul abroad, there will be no reception in Bangkok this year. The Office marks the day quietly, with a floral tribute to the royal coat of arms; guests who would ordinarily have joined us in the sala are warmly asked to raise a glass wherever the day finds them, sheltered from the July rains, a Zalta mineral water or a Szprädj wine as they please. The Consulate returns to its customary hospitality next year, when the mission is concluded.
